Evensong at King's

Last Sunday I finally had the opportunity to do something I had wanted to do since we arrived: go on a date with John to hear choral evensong at King's College in Cambridge. Evensong is a service of prayers, songs and readings done in the evening. Many Anglican churches have choirs made up of boys and men, and King's College is one the the most famous choirs in the world.  I thought John might be interested in it because he is musical, and the boys in the choir are just two or so years older than him.

We started out by getting some hot chocolate:

Then we entered the college grounds and found a seat near the choir. Below is John outside of the cathedral. I think it was built in 1515.

Below are the gates where you enter the college.

The choir was excellent as always, and the cathedral is so beautiful inside as it is mainly just lit with candles. As the sun goes down early (it is still early sunsets in February over here) the ambiance inside is really nice. John was a trooper because you have to be very silent in the service. No drawing or talking. And and one song, the Magnificat, was probably over 10 minutes long and you have to stand still through the whole thing. I was expecting him to say he didn't want to go back the next time, but he has asked to go again. He even asked to join the choir! I had read about the boys in the choir beforehand, and I had no idea that they have to board together at the Kings College prep school. So from the age of 8-13 they have to board their while they study and sing. I guess it makes sense but how hard it must be for the parents!

Anyway, we had a really nice outing and I was grateful for the time alone with him.

Cheers!
