Getting organized

Many a mother knows how crazy a house can get with kids and their toys. We have a small common area in our house so it can often feel so disorganized even though I think John has a relatively small number of toys. I try to spend one of John's naptimes each week doing some research on parenting issues. This week I came across a great idea that I have decided to implement. As you can see above, we have six different bins. I have color-coded them red, orange, yellow, green, blue and rainbow and I then divided John's toys and books up between all six bins. Therefore, Monday is our red day. On Monday we only play with the toys in the red bin. Tuesday is orange day, so we only play with the orange toys, etc. The rainbow bin is for the weekend. In addition to the toys in the bins I have a few large toys that I keep out all the time to be played with. For example, I just bought John a new car park toy ($4 at the thriftshop!!) so we are leaving that out all the time. I am also buying a few toys to hide away that I will only take out when friends come over, like a set of dumptrucks.

I can't tell you how much this system has keep us organized and happy with the few toys we have for the day. We don't get nearly as bored as we used to with our toys because of this rotation. I love learning simple tips like this!

And as it is almost May (the best month of the entire year!!) I will go ahead and give our verse for the month:

1 John 4:8- God is love

Yes it is a very simple but very powerful verse for the month. As much fun as it would be to try to memorize Ps 119 with John (ha ha), I think it is important for me to keep in mind that he is a little guy and that even as his understanding grows, he is only capable of understanding so much. So what is the main thing that I want him to understand about the Lord? Well of course I want him to know that Jesus died for his sins and through His death John may gain eternal life. But that is a hard concept for a child to grasp. However, the underlying theme of that message is that God loves him SO much! Just like God loves you and me so much. God is love. Let's remember that truth that in all things and in all our circumstances, God is love.

I just finished reading "The Shack" and that is the message of the book. God is love! Check it out.

Cheers!

What a great idea with the bins!!! We will have to give that a try! It is May- woo hoo! Too bad we don't live closer or we could go to Red Robin to celebrate both of our birthdays with free ice cream :)

I hear the guys made it back safely so hope you are enjoying this time with the family back together again.

Oh Kate, this just touches my organizational heart. :) I've seen stuff like this before, but it's a bit harder to do with older kids. Great idea though, I may have to try it out in some form or another!
