Calling all mums

Alright ladies I could really use some help on two things. Any advice would be appreciated!

Issue 1- As you can see in the photo above, we have a finger sucker on our hands. In April we went cold turkey on the pacifier and it was the best thing we ever did for John as it enabled him to learn to soothe himself and he is now a great sleeper at night. In our post-pacifier days, he sucked his fingers in the manner above only when he was really tired or upset. We didn't mind that as it was a sign that we needed to put him to bed and also that he was able to soothe himself which is another step of independence. Well, just lately he has started sucking his fingers all the time. In between bites at dinner, when he is playing, etc. We don't feel like he should never sick his fingers, but it doesn't need to happen around the clock. Any strategies?

Issue 2- The fall time change will be upon us here in the U.K. next weekend. How do you get a baby to sleep in an hour later? I feel like it isn't hard to do when you are traveling or have other distractions, but how do you change your normal routine by an hour?

Thanks in advance!

Hey Kate! No words of advice on the finger sucking - Morgan is an avid one herself, and is going on 2! She has a big fat callous on her pointer finger. As far as the 1 hour, just do it gradually - like start now, and do maybe 15 minutes at a time, putting to bed a bit earlier. Of course it may be that John is a 'by-the-clock' kinda guy, as Jackson was, but eventually he did adjust himself to the time. I do have to say I like the 'spring forward' better, cause then you get kids who sleep in!

Is he teething? That could be the culprit for the constant finger sucking as it may soothe his gums. When Kaden teethes, even now, he GNAWS on his fingers constantly. For the time change, I would say just let him adjust naturally...he will eventually get his internal clock reset, it just may be a few grumpy days...

I agree, the finger sucking could definitely be due to teething. Holly only does the multiple-finger suck when she is tired/upset, or if she is working on some new toofers.

As far as the time change, our sleep book says to either just put them to bed a bit earlier at the new time (start before the time change, like put him to bed at what will be the new bedtime even if the time change doesn't take effect until midnight) or, if he will play quietly and not get hysterical just leave him in the crib for an extra 20-30 minutes in the morning. After a few days supposedly they will get back on schedule. I say supposedly because we haven't done our time change here yet, so we'll see how well it really works.... :)
